Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users purchasing such medications must be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful return of cravings.

"I experienced something activating and you become starving," recalled an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Use

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians caution that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
