2K Hires Popular Battle Royale Developer to Rescue Challenged Action Game Ambitious Title

The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the anticipated third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Leadership Change Follows Mixed Feedback

Brinkman takes on the role of studio head at the development studio following the exit of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's underwhelming initial reveal last fall.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer updated staff about this organizational change through an internal memo, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had revealed the requirement for a clearer game identity.

The president noted that the team is now overhauling the project with a refreshed approach, aiming to address community desires.

Trend of Key Hires

The news echoes a comparable move taken by the publisher in August, when they recruited an industry veteran from the Diablo team to contribute to the BioShock development group.

Here is the full text from Ismailer's announcement:

Hello Everyone—

I know you all just finished your meeting - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the positive developments. Last time I sent you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and talented designers we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re excited for that collaboration to endure.”

With your dedication and adaptability, especially over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.

The community feedback from last fall’s the game demo was enlightening. It confirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the need for a more distinct brand.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the input to mind and revamped Project ETHOS with a renewed direction - one that’s positioned to deliver on its ambition to our audience.

Our confidence in this project increases every day. To boost the incredible progress you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce the new hire as the new Lead of the team. Following a period of talks, Ben officially joins us on the specified date.

Ben’s guidance and expertise in the competitive gaming genre is extensive, having spent the last 15 years developing and managing some of the most popular titles in gaming, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, the battle royale hit.

I invite you all in greeting him soon. We are all looking forward to keep seeing the development of Project ETHOS in the months to come.

David

Background of the Incoming Leader

The appointee presently holds the position of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier worked at major gaming companies in multiple development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, earlier in his career, had stints at other industry leaders.

Game Information and Concept

Project Ethos was revealed in last year alongside a early access event. Then, the developers presented the title as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an innovative evolution on the style."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the description states. "Take on the competition with unique powers, stakes, and obstacles that change every match. Do you withdraw carefully with your collected items? Or take a risk, risk it all, and pray your squad can earn top ranking? The decision is in your hands."

Project Ethos does not have an official launch window or platforms, but players can look forward to more updates as creation progresses.
